# 2D Inspection

> Read attenuation at a point or along a line in a 2D view

2D views can read the scan directly. A floating toolbar in the bottom-right corner of the Viewport arms the **Intensity probe** and the **Line profile**. Use them to check material density in Voyager instead of exporting the slice to another tool.

The toolbar appears on cardinal 2D views, slice planes, inspection planes, and image planes that have something to sample. It hides in the 3D view, while a workflow owns the Viewport, and when the Viewport is too small to fit the toolbar beside the slice bar or the inspection-plane dimension tools. Press **Escape**, or click the armed tool again, to put it away.

The number you read follows [Attenuation Values](/voyager/voyager-settings#attenuation-values) in Settings. **Normalized** reports 0–1. **LAC** reports the linear attenuation coefficient when the volume has a physical range. Uploaded volumes and radiographs that have no physical range stay on Normalized even if LAC is selected.

The Intensity probe shows the value under the pointer. Click to pin that value on the view. A pinned value stays with the slice you probed. Click the pin's remove control to clear it.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open a 2D view">
    Select a Reconstruction, ROI, or image plane and switch to an X, Y, or Z view, or open a slice plane. See [Getting Around](/voyager/voyager-getting-around#2d-views).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Arm the probe">
    Click **Intensity probe** in the floating toolbar. The Viewport focuses, and the value under the pointer updates as you move.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Pin a reading">
    Click the point you want to keep. The pin shows the value in the current attenuation units.
  </Step>
</Steps>

The Line profile draws a line across the slice and plots the values along it. Use it to see how attenuation changes across a wall, a bond line, or a defect, instead of probing one point at a time.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Arm Line profile">
    Click **Line profile** in the floating toolbar.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Draw the line">
    Click the start of the line, then the end. The plot appears beside the toolbar.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Read the plot">
    The plot uses the same units as the probe. Remove the line from its remove control when you are done.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Tip>
  [Stack Aggregation](/voyager/voyager-stack-aggregation) collapses a slab into one 2D view first. Probe or profile that view when the feature you care about spans more than one slice. [Unroll](/voyager/voyager-unroll) is the better path when the feature runs around a cylinder.
