CAD Comparison Tutorial

How to compare your scan against a CAD model and detect deviations and flaws.

The CAD comparison workflow allows users to compare scans against the idealized design intent. The result is a map of the deviations from the nominal state of the part, enabling users to visualize deviations faster and with more clarity.

Here is a video explaining the workflow.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Import the CAD file you want to compare against using the Import tool.

  2. Take an ROI of the area of the scan you wish to generate the comparison from.

  3. Use the surface tool to generate a mesh object representing the part's surfaces.

  4. Use the align tool to overlay the CAD file and the mesh file. The user has manual alignment control to align to the datums they wish.

  5. Use the comparison tool to run the analysis based on the alignment.

  6. Generate visuals of the comparison.
    1. The range map provides a distribution of the deviations. Use the barn doors to enforce certain tolerance ranges.
    2. Different color maps can be applied to draw attention in different ways.

You can also take dimensions on cardinal slices of CAD comparisons. Visit the Inspection Planes support page to learn more.
