Reverse Engineering Workflow

Get your Lumafield data into CAD, fast.

  1. Introduction
  2. Moving from Scan to CAD Feature Tree
  3. Moving from Scan to STEP File

When working with data from a Lumafield scanner, you get more resolution than most systems on the market will provide. This means that when you use familiar tools, such as Geomagix Design X, for reverse engineering you will find new workflows advantageous. Often, this means simple and speedy workflows:

Benefits of using Lumafield for Reverse Engineering
  • Faster workflows (up to 50% less labor)
    • No data stitching - Lumafield scans provide the whole picture in a single scan.
    • Reduced healing requirements - Lumafield scans provide manifold meshes by default.
  • No missing details
    • Lumafield meshes have no blind spots - see down bores, around corners, and inside parts.
    • Power advanced workflows such as running FEA on real voids and cracks found in your parts.

Going from Lumafield Scan to CAD Feature Tree

This workflow requires less mesh cleanup as you will use the mesh as a reference geometry. Leveraging the tools in Geomagix Design X, you can build your CAD feature tree directly around the mesh, referencing it and exporting that full feature tree into your CAD program of choice.

Great For: Parts with simple geometry, cleaning up manufacturing variation.

Going from Lumafield Scan to STEP (Generalized)

This workflow requires investing a little more time on mesh cleanup but lets you generate a STEP file fast of even the most complex geometries leveraging auto-features of Geomagix Design X.

Great For: Parts with complex geometry, getting manufacturing defects into FEA, or moving placeholders into CAD quickly.
