Runout checks how much a surface wobbles as the part turns about a datum axis. In ASME Y14.5 it is its own family of tolerances, separate from orientation. Circular Runout and Total Runout both live in the Runout group in the Toolbar in Dimensioning Mode.

Circular and total

  • Circular Runout checks one circular element at a time. Each cross-section of the surface, taken square to the datum axis, must stay inside the tolerance as the part turns. A wobble in one slice does not have to match the next.
  • Total Runout checks the whole surface at once. Every point on the surface must stay inside the tolerance as the part turns, so the surface cannot wander along the axis as well as around it.
Both controls need a datum axis to turn about. Build that axis as a datum, then rank it in a Frame when the control asks for one.

The tolerance zone

The tolerance is the full width of the wobble, in millimeters. Circular Runout applies that width to each circular element on its own. Total Runout applies one width to the entire surface.

Workflow

1

Select a runout control

Choose Circular Runout or Total Runout from the Runout group in the Toolbar.
2

Pick the surface

Click the surface to control. Eligible features highlight on hover.
3

Select the datum axis

Pick the axis the part turns about. Properties and Tolerance stay locked until the surface and its datum are picked.
4

Set tolerance and submit

Tolerance is optional: add it with +. See How every check works. Submit to add the control to the feature set. Drag the leader to place the label.

Reading the result

The callout reports how far the surface wobbles, and whether that is inside the tolerance. Measured in names the datum axis. Edit the tolerance afterward; the pass or fail state updates without a new extraction.
